SB 543 – Bigger ADUs Through Smarter Math

SB 543 tweaks how we measure ADU size—counting livable interior space instead of the outer walls. This change allows for slightly larger ADUs and helps reduce fees, too.

It also standardizes the size limit for Junior ADUs at 500 square feet of interior livable space, creating more consistency across cities and making it easier to design functional layouts in compact spaces.
