AB 6 – Exploring Simpler Codes for Small Apartments

AB 6 launches a study to see if smaller residential buildings (3–10 units) can use the simpler California Residential Code instead of the more complex Building Code. That could mean faster, more affordable construction across the state.

This change would especially benefit small infill developers and homeowners looking to build modest multiplexes—potentially unlocking thousands of “missing middle” housing units.
