When a family decides to add an accessory dwelling, they often consider converting a storage building or garage on the property. This works so well when the existing building is in good shape. Here’s a gorgeous garage conversion in Berkeley, just across the street from another amazing project.
Brit and Ethan decided to convert their detached 11′ x 22′ garage into a studio apartment for Brit’s mother, Iral. Based on the existing structure and their needs, a New Avenue designer created a plan that Iral absolutely loves.
The garage’s foundation, exterior walls, and roof were all used in creating this new accessory home. A ductless mini split heat pump conserves space and energy while keeping the home comfortable.
With a kitchenette on one end and a full bathroom on the other, this gorgeous accessory dwelling includes everything an active grandparent needs. A living/sleeping area fills most of the space, making use of a pull-out sofa bed. Ample natural light makes the home feel spacious. Neutral tones and complementary finishes give it a custom, modern look. We just love the family’s personal touches that make this space a real home.
“Living in my new little home is a dream come true,” says Iral. “I love it so much, and thank you again and again for the beautiful job you have done and the kindness and generosity you have shown us. Everyone who has seen it is amazed, including the appraiser who was here yesterday. I have also shown the home to one couple who I hope has contacted you to work with them and have also given your name to two other parties interested in contacting you.”
Thank you, Iral. We’re thrilled that you feel at home in your new place!
The budget for this project came to $92,273.48. You can download the complete budget below.
