Cost to design a two- bedroom backyard dwelling in Berkeley

Jon and Avril, homeowners in Berkeley, considered adding a backyard accessory dwelling to their property years ago, but they were disappointed by the restrictions—650 square feet would not be enough for two people. Now that the rules have been relaxed, they are again considering an addition, and they came to New Avenue for design services.

John and Avril would like to build a two-bedroom home for their son and his wife. Later, when their son's family grows, they plan to move into the accessory dwelling and move their son and his family into the main home.

Since John and Avril both do some of their work at home, they'll need office space in the ADU. They also want a loft.

The cost to design this project was $12,960 at the time of design. In 2020, design costs would be $16,848. You can view the full design budget below.
