Adding a detached office/bedroom in Oakland

Floor plans for a new detached office/bedroom and remodeled bathroom

Kim and Jason, the owners of a gorgeous Japanese-style house in Oakland, loved their home but needed some additional space. They wanted to build a detached office/studio that could also be used as a guest room. They also wanted to remodel part of the main home. The existing office would become a bedroom, and the existing half bath/laundry would be upgraded to include a shower. One of their requirements: preserve the property’s beautiful trees and tea house.

A New Avenue design professional worked with the homeowners to develop plans for the new office and remodel.

The new space makes it possible for the family to stay in the house and neighborhood they love while adding more usable space to their home.

How to add a detached guest room or office to your existing home

With over 750 projects, we’ve learned that most older homes need four major changes to bring them up to date:

  1. A new owner’s retreat with an updated bedroom and bathroom

  2. An open kitchen/living area

  3. Whole-house sustainability upgrades for personal health, cost savings, and environmental sustainability

  4. An accessory dwelling to rent out or use for family

At New Avenue, we provide turnkey solutions for homeowners who want to get more from their property. Our cost estimates are based on over a decade of experience and include everything you need to create a home that will support you for life: team creation, design, engineering, permitting, construction, materials, and project administration.
