Cost to design a one-bedroom, one-bathroom ADU in San Jose

Russell, the owner of a home in San Jose, wanted to make the most of his underused property by adding an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) to the back yard. He plans to rent his ADU out. In addition, it will be available for a family member if the need arises.

The ADU would have to fit into a semi-triangular space, and Russell was especially interested in good engineering. A New Avenue design professional created an ADU that would meet his needs and would be a good rental home (something that's in high demand in San Jose).

The design includes a bedroom with a large closet, a living room, a dining area, a kitchen, and a laundry area.

The design cost for this project was $13,105.00 at the time of design. In 2020, a design like this would cost about $15,000. You can view the full design budget here.
