Cost to convert a garage into a one-bedroom backyard dwelling in Santa Cruz

When Toni and Jessica needed a comfortable, nearby place for their aging mother, they decided to build one for her in their backyard. It's a smart decision; they would be able to care for their mom and give her the independence and private space she deserved.

Since they were converting their garage, Toni and Jessica still needed space to store their bicycles, grill, and various other items. Their New Avenue partner designer created a one-bedroom ADU with an attic suitable for storage.

The garage structure provided the base for the design, but it wouldn't be enough space, so an addition was planned to allow room for a separate bedroom.

Toni and Jessica also emphasized the need for a desk area for their mom, so the designer was sure to include a dedicated desk in the plans. A great room that could function as a study, living area, and dining room would be  the center of activity for the unit.
