A custom home is a one-of-a-kind house that is designed for a specific client and for a particular location.
At New Avenue we always start with you, your family and your work. We consider the activities, goals and needs that you have. Then an architect will design a home to meet those goals.
The design is based on planning codes that the local government defines. Then the design is permitted by the architect. General contractors will provide bids to build the entire home including all site work, utilities, and construction.
The das of a few bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen are long gone. Today’s custom homes tend to have large master baths, open kitchens, big decks, space to entertain, playrooms, offices, au pair suites and more.
Architects are trained to design in any style such as modern, craftsman, mediterranean, tudor, colonial, victorian and more. Whether 1,500 square feet or 6,000 square feet, a custom home is designed for you.
We have project managed, designed and built custom homes. The homes serve many purposes at many different stages of life.
A home in the country to retire to: A 6,000 square foot vacation home that will become a retirement home in the country. The owners expect to move there in 20 years and stay there for the next.
A teardown and rebuild: Sometimes homes built somewhat recently just don’t have the “good bones” that you want to save and it does make sense to tear a home down and start over. In much of California little cottages were slapped together in the 60s and 70s and they have deficient everything: plumbing, wiring, no insulation, no seismic engineering, leaks, single pane windows and more. In one of these homes a young family wanted everything you expect in a new home and they wanted a modern style. They love it!
A new home on a lot: Many cities and towns still have a few lots that are undeveloped. Often times they have steep hills, hostile neighbors, water issues or other challenges. Advances in engineering and construction methods often make it possible to develop these lots at this time. We use a specialized team of soils engineers, civil engineers, structural engineers, architects and contractors to build on these undeveloped lots.
As for architecture style…well there is a massive universe that architects spend a lifetime studying and practicing. Here’s a great place to start:
American colonial architecture
Cape Dutch architecture
Dingbat (apartment building style)
Federation (Australian Style, Circa 1901)
French Provincial architecture
Greek Revival Style architecture
Hall and parlor house
Indian veranda style
Mar del Plata style
Mediterranean Revival architecture
New Old House Neo-eclectic
Rammed earth house
Rumah Gadang (traditional style of the Minangkabau in Indonesia)
Split level home, also called split-level ranch
