We are pleased to introduce Matt Waitkus, our first full-time design professional and an equity owner in New Avenue Homes.
Matt lives with his wife, Susan, their two children (ages 5 and 10), and their sweet puppy, whom the kids dubbed Penelope (aka Poppy) of Piedmont. On a typical weekend, he can be found volunteering with his daughter’s swim team and his son’s baseball league or spending time with his family and friends.
A life of design
As the son of an architect, Matt became fascinated with design, and there was never any question that he would enter the field as well. He earned his master’s degree in architecture from the University of Detroit.
From there, Matt got into highly creative projects in the corporate world. He’s worked on the San Francisco Civic Center and Ninoy International Airport with top-tier firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, LLP. Other highlights include designing residential towers with Arquitectonica. He’s also traveled the world as a lead store designer for the Gap and as the lead research and development designer for Old Navy’s Japanese launch.
Seeking to leverage his creativity and experience in a more personal role, Matt moved into residential architecture. He’s spent time in Marin remodeling and rebuilding homes and completed many fascinating projects in the San Francisco Bay Area.
“It’s solving the puzzle.”
From total tear-downs to major rehabs to large additions, Matt is no stranger to ambitious and unique projects. One such project–his most interesting and most challenging—meant digging down, below the building’s foundation, to enlarge the space below the ground level. His other unique experiences include TIC-to-condo conversions and working with property owners to bring their buildings up to code. He’s well versed in getting the right permits and re-designing residences to make them safe and legal.
Matt is a strong believer in work–life balance, and he truly understands the powerful role a home plays in its residents’ lives. He’s fascinated by the potential of ADUs to boost property values, be a source of supplemental income for their owners, and provide much-needed housing in the Bay Area. As a New Avenue partner architect, Matt enjoys design projects that will have a big impact on his clients’ lives.
When asked about his favorite part of design, Matt doesn’t hesitate. “It’s the interaction with the client, and it’s solving the puzzle,” he says. “Every project I look at as a puzzle. There’s always a solution for it, and I like going through that process with the client and watching it come to life and become something the client really wants to live in.”
