Marian, a homeowner in Berkeley, needed more space for her mother, who had recently moved in with her. Too give the family plenty of room, she approached New Avenue for help in adding a one-bedroom, one-bath unit to the back of her existing two-story home.
Because the first floor of the house sits above ground level, the project included steps leading up from the backyard to the deck, which is accessible from the new bedroom.
To make room for the new construction and its roofline, a window on the second story of the home had to be relocated. Some trees were removed from the backyard to clear a space for the new unit.
Inside, the addition includes a bedroom and an accessible bathroom. Since the original home had only one bathtub (which was on the second floor), this space will make a big difference for Marian’s family.
