At the end of a long narrow driveway this Spanish style home and a new cottage are tucked between old oak trees and giant redwood trees. The new cottage is a beautiful 674 square foot home with a double sided glass fireplace the faces both the bedroom and the living room. Large windows in the kitchen and living room overlook the Orinda hills. Extra storage is tucked throughout with a nice coat closet at the main door and extra linen storage in the bathroom.
The real story is about the three generations that share this big hillside lot in Orinda. Before building this cottage, the grandmother was living in Southern California and was cut off from her children and grandchildren. Meanwhile her daughter, son in-law and their two children outgrew their small home in Oakland. With school starting for the older grandchild, a need for some extra childcare and space becoming and issue, it made sense for all three generations to come together and create a new small home.
This cottage reduced the commute to see each other from a flight between San Francisco and LA, to a leisurely stroll past a fountain and across a small brick courtyard.
Now, the grandmother looks out her window to see her daughter's home and her grandchild time has increased from a few holidays a year to every day, a change that any grandparent would appreciate. The benefits of an extra babysitter and summer camp chauffeur makes life easier for these young parents. All in all, this little compound in the suburbs makes for an ideal family setting.
