A Berkeley couple created this two bedroom two bath addition to their Berkeley house for their life-long friend, Kitty, who needs a wheelchair accessible home. They have all been friends and active in supporting their community for decades. At this stage in her life, Kitty, needs a live in attendant and also wants to be close to the community and friends she has loved for much of her life.
The backyard cottage is actually an addition to the main home that is connected by a shared laundry room and green house. The home is fully accessible or all with a wheelchair ramp, grab bars throughout, a large bathroom with a flush shower pan, a ceiling lift and track to the bathroom and big windows that allow people inside to enjoy an indoor/outdoor feeling. The large windows and views are especially important because their shared yard is bustling with activity including bee hives, vegetables gardens and a big area for entertaining. The planning permits even have an approval for a pool that will double as both a lap pool and a therapy pool but the pool is going to be added at a later date.
There is a new office in the corner of the yard for working from home and it has a ladder up to a roof garden.
The house is built to meet ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards.
